The most expensive bag in the world is Jane Birkin’s original Birkin, sold for 8.6 million euros at Sotheby’s in Paris in July 2025. An absolute record for a handbag, which smashed all previous records and confirmed a reality well known to collectors: some bags are now worth more than a villa on the French Riviera. 1 · Jane Birkin’s original Birkin: 8.6 million euros

It is the most expensive bag in history. On 10 July 2025, at Sotheby’s in Paris, the very first Birkin bag · the prototype created by Hermès in 1984 for Jane Birkin herself · was hammered down for 7 million euros, or approximately 8.6 million euros including fees, to a Japanese collector. Starting at 1 million euros, the bidding lasted about ten minutes, contested by nine collectors in the room, on the phone and online.

This unique piece features the initials “J.B.”, a non-detachable shoulder strap and even a built-in nail clipper, a detail requested by the singer. Worn, marked and covered with traces of life, this bag tells a story · and that is precisely what gives it its value. Jane Birkin had donated it as early as 1994 to raise funds for AIDS research.

2 · The Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse: 3.8 million dollars

As for “new” bags, the record has belonged to jeweller Mouawad since Guinness World Records 2010. Its heart-shaped 1001 Nights Diamond Purse is crafted in 18-carat gold and set with 4,517 diamonds · 105 yellow, 56 pink and 4,356 colourless, totalling 381.92 carats. Ten artisans spent 8,800 hours creating it. List price: 3.8 million dollars.

3 · The Hermès Kelly Rose Gold: around 2 million dollars

Created with jeweller Pierre Hardy, the Kelly Rose Gold is not a leather bag: it is a solid rose gold sculpture set with 1,160 diamonds, produced in an edition of just 12 pieces. Its value is generally estimated at around 2 million dollars by specialist publications · whenever an example deigns to appear on the market.

4 · The Hermès Himalaya: leather records

Before the sale of the original Birkin, the auction record belonged to the Hermès Himalaya models, crafted from Niloticus crocodile whose white-grey gradient evokes the Himalayan peaks. A Kelly 28 Himalaya sold for 513,040 dollars in November 2021, while a Birkin Himalaya with hardware set with over 240 diamonds on 18-carat white gold reached around 379,000 dollars at Christie’s in Hong Kong. These bags remain the most sought-after on the resale market today.

Why such prices? The mechanics of rarity

Three forces explain this surge. First, engineered scarcity: Hermès does not sell its Birkin bags on request, and waiting lists sustain continuous demand. Next, heritage value: as pieces of pure craftsmanship, these bags endure through decades and trends. Finally, speculation: on the resale market, rare models trade well above their boutique retail price, and auction houses have turned them into a standalone category, on a par with collectible watches.

The sale of the original Birkin changed the game: by passing 8 million euros, a handbag entered the realm of masterpieces, alongside Old Masters and historic diamonds. Upcoming major auctions will show whether this ceiling, too, is set to fall.
