In brief
- The record for a Ferrari 250 GTO is 51,705,000 dollars, paid on 13 November 2023 at RM Sotheby’s in New York for chassis 3765, the only 1962-type GTO entered in a race by Scuderia Ferrari (approximately 48 million euros at the time).

- In January 2026, the “Bianco Speciale” 3729GT was sold for 38.5 million dollars at Mecum: each chassis has its own market value.
- 36 units built from 1962 to 1964, with a 3-litre V12 of approximately 300 hp.

With four places in the top 10 of our ranking of the most expensive cars in the world, the Ferrari 250 GTO is the most coveted collector car in history. But its price does not exist in the singular: it depends on the chassis, its racing history and its owners. Here are the reference public sales, from 38 to 51.7 million dollars.
How much does a Ferrari 250 GTO cost?
The highest price ever paid in public for a 250 GTO is 51,705,000 dollars, including fees, on 13 November 2023, during the sale organised by RM Sotheby’s at Sotheby’s headquarters in New York. Chassis 3765 is, according to RM Sotheby’s, the only 1962-type GTO entered by Scuderia Ferrari itself and the only factory GTO originally fitted with an engine of approximately 4 litres. At the time, this represented approximately 48 million euros.
Before it, chassis 3413GT, winner of the 1962 Coppa Fagioli with Edoardo Lualdi, had been sold for 48,405,000 dollars by RM Sotheby’s in Monterey in August 2018, approximately 42 million euros at the time. Private sales can go higher: chassis 4153GT reportedly changed hands in 2018 for approximately 70 million dollars, according to several reports, an amount never confirmed by the parties.

Why the 250 GTO is worth so much
Designed for homologation in the GT category, only 36 units of the 250 GTO were produced, 33 with the 1962-1963 bodywork and 3 with the 1964 version. It gave Ferrari three consecutive titles in the GT championship, from 1962 to 1964, and two victories at the Tour de France Automobile.
Each chassis has a documented history, and it is this history that determines the price. 3765 raced in the 1962 Nürburgring 1,000 km driven by Willy Mairesse and Mike Parkes, finishing second overall and first in its class, before being entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans the same year. It had belonged to the same owner since 1985.

Against the most expensive car in the world
Even its record remains far from the summit. The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé was sold for 135 million euros by RM Sotheby’s in May 2022, and the Mercedes W 196 R Stromlinienwagen for 51,155,000 euros in February 2025. The 2023 GTO holds third place in the ranking, with the 2018 one in fourth.
The 250 GTO market value today
The January 2026 sale served as a reminder: the Bianco Speciale, the only GTO delivered in white by the factory, went for 38.5 million dollars at Mecum, below the 2018 and 2023 records. The value depends on the racing record, the continuity of the history and the originality of the parts, and the average for the model says nothing about the next sale.
