In brief

  • The most expensive perfume in the world, Shumukh, is listed at $1.295 million, or around €1.14 million: this is the price announced by the Emirati maison The Spirit of Dubai at its launch in March 2019, as reported by Guinness World Records.
  • This is not an auction price: no sale has been made public.
  • Guinness World Records awarded it the record for the most diamonds set on a perfume bottle: 3,571.
  • The bottle stands at 1.97 metres on its pedestal and is sprayed by remote control.
  • The most expensive commercially available perfume according to Guinness remains Clive Christian’s No.1 Imperial Majesty: £115,000 for 500 ml in 2005.

Almost two metres tall, thousands of diamonds, gold, silver and pearls: Shumukh is as much a piece of fine goldsmithing as it is a perfume. Presented in Dubai in 2019, it still holds the unofficial title of the world’s most expensive perfume. Here is its price, what it contains and what sets it apart from other record-breaking bottles.

How much does the Shumukh perfume cost?

The maison The Spirit of Dubai, a subsidiary of the Nabeel Perfumes group, set its price at 4.752 million dirhams. Guinness World Records presents it at $1.295 million in its April 2019 announcement, describing it as the most expensive perfume in the world. At late September 2026 exchange rates, this represents around €1.14 million.

This figure should be taken for what it is: a listed price by the maison, rather than an actual sale price. No transaction has been made public since the launch. The sum primarily pays for the object itself, a bottle-sculpture set with precious stones, rather than the liquid fragrance, which the maison states is three litres.

A bottle designed like a sculpture

Shumukh means “deserving the highest” in Arabic. According to Guinness World Records, the bottle brings together seven elements of Emirati culture, including pearl diving, falconry and the rose. A falcon crests the golden dome, Arabian horses frame the colonnade, and a pearl sits proudly at the centre. The remote control allows the user to adjust the height and direction of the spray.

Following the presentation of its certificate, the bottle was displayed in the Fashion Avenue of the Dubai Mall as part of the ART+ art programme. According to details shared by the maison at launch, the fragrance required over three years of work and nearly 500 trials, centred around oud, rose, amber and sandalwood.

Other bottles in the ranking

In our ranking of the most expensive perfumes in the world, Shumukh leads DKNY’s Golden Delicious, a unique high-jewellery bottle listed at one million dollars in 2011. Meanwhile, Clive Christian’s No.1 Imperial Majesty holds the Guinness record for the most expensive commercially available perfume: ten 500 ml Baccarat crystal bottles, sold for £115,000 each in November 2005, or around $205,000 at the time. Bulgari’s Opera Prima, sold for €200,000 to a private client in 2018, remains one of the few documented sales in the ranking.

The price today

Shumukh has no market valuation: in the absence of a public sale, its price remains that of 2019. For a bottle that is actually available, prices drop significantly. Chanel’s N°5 Grand Extrait in a 2,021 ml Baccarat bottle, released in fifty-five pieces for the perfume’s centenary in 2021, was offered at €28,000. The price of Shumukh belongs to a different category altogether: that of high jewellery.
