In brief

  • The luxury group Kering has finalised the acquisition of the house Creed for an estimated amount of 3.5 billion euros.
  • This strategic operation allows the Kering Beauté division to scale up in the global high perfumery market.
  • Founded in 1760, the prestigious house Creed boasts a turnover exceeding 250 million euros.

In October 2023, the Kering Beauté division, under the strategic direction of François-Henri Pinault, reached a historic milestone by finalising the acquisition of 100% of the high perfumery house Creed. This significant transaction, estimated at approximately 3.5 billion euros, marks the French luxury giant’s firm intent to establish itself in a particularly dynamic, resilient, and highly profitable market segment. By integrating such a respected name, Kering is not merely adding a prestigious brand to its portfolio; the group is gaining an exceptional growth driver, characterised by remarkable operating margins typical of the most exclusive players in the high-end beauty universe.

A highly strategic acquisition for Kering Beauté

Behind the scenes of a major acquisition

This major acquisition was definitively concluded after obtaining the essential approval of international competition authorities. The Kering group acquired the entire capital of the house Creed from funds controlled by the investment structure BlackRock Long Term Private Capital Europe, as well as from Javier Ferrán, who was successfully chairing the company at the time. Although the official amount was not formally disclosed by the parties, all financial estimates concur on an overall valuation of approximately 3.5 billion euros, reflecting the unique value of this historic asset.

To finance this large-scale operation without compromising its balance sheet, the luxury group had anticipated its cash flow needs from the end of the summer period of 2023. Kering thus issued a bond loan totalling 3.8 billion euros on the markets. This anticipated and rigorous financial manoeuvre was primarily intended to secure the capital necessary for the integration of the perfume house into its new asset portfolio, while also guaranteeing future development resources.

The consolidation dynamic of high perfumery

The acquisition of Creed is at the heart of a profound consolidation movement in the global luxury beauty market. For several years, the high perfumery sector has shown performance and growth rates significantly superior to those of traditional selective perfumery. High-end customers, seeking exclusivity, authenticity, and singularity, are increasingly turning to niche fragrances at the expense of more standardised scents. For large luxury conglomerates, owning a renowned independent house ensures a highly resilient source of income in the face of economic cycles, while benefiting from an extremely prestigious brand positioning.

The heritage of a perfumer dynasty

The legacy of an exceptional perfume house

Founded in London in 1760 by James Henry Creed, the house began its long and prestigious history as a master tailor for royal families and the British and European high aristocracy. Over the centuries, the company made a masterful artistic transition to become one of the most exclusive and sought-after names in global high perfumery. No fewer than seven generations of creators from the same family line have succeeded each other at the helm of the house to preserve exceptional artisanal savoir-faire, skilfully blending the exacting standards and attention to detail from its original tailoring with the excellence of French perfumery techniques.

The house’s exclusive fragrances are crafted with the utmost care at its factory located near the forest of Fontainebleau, using rare, precious, and rigorously selected natural ingredients from around the world. At the heart of this exceptional offering, the iconic perfume Aventus has established itself as the brand’s undisputed and legendary best-seller. This olfactory creation has captivated an extremely demanding international clientele thanks to its highly recognisable woody and fruity trail, becoming a true cultural and commercial benchmark in the niche perfumery universe.

A launchpad for the cosmetics division

The integration of this historic entity provides the Kering Beauté division with an immediately high-performing, highly profitable operational structure boasting immense global recognition. Even before its acquisition by the Pinault family group, the house Creed displayed remarkably robust financial health. The company recorded a turnover exceeding 250 million euros for its annual financial year ending 31 March 2023, driven by double-digit growth dynamics in previous years, confirming the relevance of its ultra-selective market positioning.

Rather than undertaking the development of a global infrastructure from scratch, Kering Beauté now relies on a particularly robust physical and commercial distribution network. The prestigious house indeed boasts 36 exclusive own-operated boutiques worldwide, complemented by a highly selective presence in over 1,400 independent points of sale and luxury department stores. This network of excellence constitutes an ideal logistical, commercial, and relational platform to ultimately accelerate the deployment of beauty activities and olfactory licences for other flagship houses of the luxury group, such as Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Pomellato, or Qeelin.

Industrial synergies and operational excellence

The rapprochement between Creed and the Kering Beauté ecosystem paves the way for significant industrial and technical synergies. With an internal and controlled production facility located near Fontainebleau, Creed possesses unique expertise in the formulation, maturation, and packaging of high-end perfumes. This valuable industrial savoir-faire can be shared and leveraged to support the creative development of future perfume lines for the various couture houses of the Kering group. This pooling of expertise guarantees the maintenance of impeccable manufacturing quality and a level of prestige consistent with ultra-luxury standards.

International growth ambitions

A highly ambitious international expansion

Under the aegis and support of the Pinault family, the strategic roadmap allocated to the Kering Beauté teams promises to be particularly ambitious. The group plans to significantly intensify the global commercial presence of the house Creed in key geographical markets with high potential. Expansion efforts primarily target Asian countries, with a particular focus on the Chinese market, where consumer demand for niche and exceptional perfumery is experiencing remarkable growth. Furthermore, Kering intends to optimise the brand’s visibility and distribution within global Travel Retail networks, a highly promising channel for prestigious brands.

This internationalisation will be accompanied by an expansion of Creed’s offering towards new ranges of feminine perfumes and body care products. This diversification plan will enable the development of the prestigious perfume house, whose acquisition is estimated at 3.5 billion euros.
