A spectacular scenography in the heart of Brooklyn
To inaugurate its new Williamsburg boutique, Hermès set New York directly on the table. At Powerhouse Arts in Brooklyn, hundreds of miniature buildings slipped between the guests to form a long, illuminated urban silhouette. Conceived by Hermès International and produced by STUDIO BOUM, the installation replaced the traditional centrepiece with an entire city. Its buildings, bathed in purple light, ran across the room and transformed the dinner into a nocturnal stroll through a scaled-down version of the metropolis. Placed in the middle of the cutlery, the miniature constructions accompanied the guests throughout the evening, as if the districts of New York had invited themselves between the glasses and the plates. The choice of a purple palette gave this architectural ensemble an almost surreal look. Raw kanpachi and Ossetra caviar sat alongside purple cauliflower and sweet potato of the same colour. The meal ended with “Sunset”, a three-tiered pavlova designed as the final scene of this city at twilight. This continuity between the scenography and the cuisine is what makes the project so interesting. Spread over two levels, this 44th American boutique brings together the sixteen métiers of the house in a space designed by the Parisian agency RDAI. Its architecture adopts the codes of a contemporary Brooklyn workshop, with an industrial aesthetic, a dialogue between materials and several interventions by artists based in Williamsburg. The neighbourhood was no longer just the address of the evening: it became the very material of its decor. This miniature staging of New York echoes a more satirical twist, imagined a year earlier in the streets of SoHo.
